Elmwood is one of the US's great mineral localities, known for its outstanding calcites, fluorites, barytes, and sphalerites, often in combination. This small-cabinet specimen features a line of fluorite cubes, to 2.1 cm, cresting a matrix of lustrous sphalerite so that it displays very aesthetically. The fluorites are classic for Elmwood. Translucent-to-gemmy with lighter cores, they have distinct, dark-purple edging, and demonstrate textured edges and faces. You can't look at them and not hardly know this is archetypal Elmwood. Adding to their allure are the intriguing purple radiation spots which you sometimes see in these fluorites, as well as their variable fluorescence. Under SW, the cores have a muted yellow-white coloration (likely from hydrocarbons), and under LW the cubes glow a luminous, deep violet. This is a very fine, aesthetic piece that so exemplifies this great locality.
