Quartz Gwindel (var. Smoky)
Among the most highly-prized products of the Alpine Clefts are the quartz crystals known as “gwindels", one of the most fascinating forms of quartz to be found. Indeed, they are so interesting, unusual, and attractive that they hold a place of distinction within the entire mineral kingdom, period. In gwindels, the quartz crystals appear stacked, side by side and on top of each other, creating these wonderful and intriguing vertical clusters. This well-formed, completely GEMMY gwindel has a perfectly water-clear, light-smoky color that gives the feel of cascading water frozen in time. The terminations of the crystals are sharp, and there is classic rotation (15 degrees, in this case) between the crystals along the a-axis, as well as some offset. This rotation is another very distinctive characteristic of this habit. This is a SUPERB small-cabinet specimen with great clarity, high luster, and excellent form. Previously in the Brent Lockhart collection of Swiss classic minerals.
