Hessonite garnets from the venerable Jeffrey Mine are considered by many to be at least among the finest garnets in the world, and this large miniature lives up to the reputation. The crystals range up to 1.3 cm, with the glassy luster and excellent gemminess enhancing the classic honey color. The faces and striated bevels reflect light to show just how beautiful, indeed perfect, the forms of these garnets are. The mine officially shut down in 2001 when asbestos became a nonviable commodity, so opportunities to own a Jeffrey Mine garnet, especially of this quality, do not come along very often. This is a fantastic matrix plate with dominant gem crystals on a matrix of host rock, itself accented by tiny sparkling garnets like sugar crystals.
