This specimen features lustrous, sharply terminated black schorl crystals up to 3.5 cm in length, elegantly embedded across a quartz rich matrix. The crystals display classic prismatic forms and glossy surfaces, highlighting the distinctive character of schorl from this classic locality. Mesa Grande, located in San Diego County, has a long history of mining and mineral collecting, with the area known for producing gem quality tourmaline and associated minerals from pegmatite veins during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This piece is preserved with an antique label, as shown at the end of the video, dating it to the early 20th century, providing provenance and a tangible connection to one of California's historic mineral localities. A striking example of classic American tourmaline, it combines aesthetic appeal, historical significance, and collector interest in one impressive specimen.
