World-famous for its unique burnt-orange coloured barrel-shaped crystals of Mimetite, known by the name Campylite, the Dry Gill mine in the Caldbeck Fells in the northern part of the English Lake District is historically one of the most important localities in Northern England. Baryte is known as an occasional associate with the Mimetite, but rarely in well formed terminated crystals. This fine miniature specimen from Malcolm Southwood's Collection doesn't contain any Mimetite, but the Baryte crystals are quite distinctive, forming finely divergent groups of thin bladed crystals of a cream colour but white internally. Small amounts of rusty orange iron oxides are seen with these crystals which form a small, but pretty grouping. Individually, the Baryte crystals reach 2 cm in length.
