Smoky Quartz
Smoky quartz sceptre group, 7 cm, from Mooralla, Victoria, Australia. I dug this piece in the late 1980s. Since this is a designated fossicking reserve, only hand digging with simple tools is permitted. I’m not lazy but did get frustrated at the number of times I started digging a hole only to realize that I was actually digging into an earlier digger’s fill! Also, the productive clay layer containing these beautiful crystal clusters was typically 2 or more meters down. Jeff Scovil photo.
