Quartz (var. Herkimer diamond), 4.8 cm, from the Herkimer Diamond mine, Middleville, Herkimer County, New York. Collected by T. L. Baskin in the spring of 1961. A new Ford station wagon was offered in trade by an onlooker when the crystal was first wiped off that morning; photo by Jeff Scovil.
