Almandine garnet known as “the Subway Garnet,” 15 cm, unearthed on 35th Street between 7th Avenue and Broadway in Manhattan during an excavation for a sewer in August 1885. It is considered to be the most famous mineral specimen from New York City. Ex collection of the New York Mineralogical Club, conveyed to the American Museum of Natural History in 1968.
