Quartz Japan-law twin, 16.5 cm, from the Spruce claim, Spruce Ridge, King County, Washington. This quartz group with a flattened Japan-law twin was found by Neal Pfaff, Sandy Ludlum and William Hawes on July 10, 1977. The tales of collecting describe the unpleasant conditions under which the quartz and pyrite specimens were collected. The method involved drilling into the cliff wall and blasting to split up the rock while rappelling on ropes. The splits were then opened by hammering, and specimens were extracted from these narrow spaces, with cold water running everywhere. They were finally wrapped and taken down the cliff face, again by ropes. (This specimen is illustrated in two references cited.)
