Tanzanite (a variety of zoisite), 9 cm, from the Merelani mine, located on the slopes of the Lelatema Mountains in the Manyara Region, about 70 km southeast of the town of Arusha, Tanzania. Gem-quality tanzanite showing pronounced trichroism (different colors in three different directions) was first found there in 1968. Forever Collection; Tom Spann photo.
