Fluorite (penetration twin)
This is a fluorite from China that surprised me, even though I have been going to China since 2005 and "seen it all": especially from the oldest fluorite orefields in Chenzhou, Hunan, where I have travelled many times. At first glance, it looked Russian (1990s Dalnegorsk) for the shocking colorless perfection of NOT having any color, with sharp edges. And yet, Russian fluorites do not often show this kind of twinning at size; and the crystal has some subtle growth raises at a few edges. And, yet it came from a trusted Chinese friend who got it from a source; and we have all confirmed that it was a small Chinese find in 2022-23 at a mine well known since the early 1990s for green fluorites, and from which we had not seen colorless crystals at all. The cluster is razor sharp, with edges so fine and geometric. The twinning is evident immediately in how the sharp corners of the small crystal comes out at the viewer as I would hold it, and pokes out from the two larger crystals at just the right angle to see the symmetry even though the colorless fluorite shows no growth zone extending back within the larger host crystals. Note: there is restoration on the outward-pointing corner tip of that small extended crystal, and the edge leading back to its host crystals; but this restoration with epoxy is done so well as to be completely invisible unless looking with UV light in the dark, to inspect. Given the rarity, and impactful geometry of the piece, and the inability to actually see the restoration since it blends in so well as it is all simply colorless, I can accept this restoration but it should be disclosed and specified fully to be clear. The piece is hugely impactful in the hand and, so far as we know, one of only a handful of specimens of this type recovered to date here despite decades of tonnage of green fluorite production. It is truly unique when you see it, with a sharpness hard to convey in photos.
