This specimen is an extraordinary surprise. Very few significant old Spanish cinnabars exist outside historic museum collections, which makes an example like this genuinely rare. The locality dates back to the Roman era and has been worked more or less continuously since that time. Although relatively few fine specimens were preserved, those that survived became important reference examples in the early development of mineralogy. For centuries, this district was also one of Europe’s primary sources of mercury.
