Tennantite
Some of the orebodies at Tsumeb mine were extremely rich in Tennantite (now the Tennantite Subgroup) the oxidation and alteration of which produced the diverse suite of copper, zinc and iron arsenates for which the mine is famed. With the restructuring of the Tennantite and Tetrahedrite groups of minerals many new species have been designated with most of the Tsumeb Tennantite falling within the bounds of Tennantite-(Zn). Geochemically this helps to explain the abundance of secondary Smithsonite (zinc carbonate), and its frequent association with residual 'Tennantite'. This miniature specimen is a remarkable one. Well-formed tetrahedral crystals of Tennantite are sometimes seen in collections of Tsumeb minerals, but are rare in comparison to the generally massive ores. At at least 3 cm on edge this perfect Tennantite-(Zn) crystal is exceptionally large and with a small amount of accompanying Quartz matrix is a really remarkable example of this species not just from Tsumeb, but anywhere in the world.
