Azurite with Dolomite
Tsumeb mine is famous for having produced some of the world's finest specimens of Azurite, but many are off-matrix crystals. Fine display specimens with sharp crystals sat upon a host that provides geological context are unusual, making this small cabinet size piece from the Kessler Collection in Germany so wonderful. The matrix includes a band of grey metallic sulphide (possibly Chalcocite) but with extensive white, cream, beige and orange areas which could represent a suite of unusual secondary species. However, it is Azurite that is the most prominent secondary species here, presenting as exceptionally glossy, very dark blue bladed crystals. These crystals form a quite dense aggregate spanning a cavity across the main display surface of this specimen. Individually, these crystals reach 1.6 cm in length and are really well formed with superb detail to their crystal faces, but it is their formation with others as radiating sprays and parallel groups that really looks so superb. There is only minor damage to one or two crystal tips, otherwise its quality is excellent. The colour of the crystals is very deep blue, but around the edges of the crystal-lined cavity a much brighter blue is seen. A really choice Tsumeb Azurite.
