Gartrellite on Azurite
A 3.4 cm long, sharp bladed Azurite crystal, dark blue in colour and with glossy opaque surfaces has been internally corroded and replaced by powdery yellow Gartrellite. This alteration and replacement has occurred very selectively with parts of the original Azurite crystal completely intact, but others totally replaced. A small second bladed Azurite crystal splays off from the main crystal towards one end and also shows partial alteration to Gartrellite. Although well-formed, the Azurite crystals are no longer perfectly terminated, but the impact of this specimen comes from the rarity of Gartrellite, a complex lead copper iron arsenate hydroxide hydrate. A pale green mineral is also present associated with the Gartrellite, but I would not want to speculate what that could be. Ex Hettrich Collection.
