Rhodochrosite
Unknown Owner
An individual classic cherry-red 'dog-tooth' scalenohedral gemmy Rhodochrosite crystal from the famous N'Chwaning mines in South Africa. It is crystals like this, first found in the 1970s, that placed N'Chwaning on the map as the world's most important locality for Rhodochrosite (manganese carbonate). At 2.2 cm in length this crystal is a thumbnail-size piece, but is really high quality. Crystals like this were often cut into gems due to their intense colour and excellent transparency. It shows extremely fine crystal faces with lovely detail from its growth lines.
