Quartz var. Amethyst
This mine has been producing small pockets of some of the most beautiful amethyst yet found in North America. This is an attractive matrix piece featuring a glassy, essentially doubly terminated, 5 cm amethyst crystal hosted in a nest dozens of 2 to 8 mm, sparkling quartz crystals. The amethyst is a variegated rich to pale purple crystal, from top to bottom, with a perfect point at the top. There is an unusual area of interrupted growth at the intersection of two pyramid faces and so one edge has irregular shape, although it is complete. This crystal is situated nicely in a natural pocket, which protected it - and in fact, probably WAS the pocket! These form in such small holes, and we are lucky to get any surviving specimens on matrix. This is a very pretty small cabinet example of the gemmy amethyst discovered in recent years and one can see why these are so popular. It was collected by mine partner-owner Rick Kennedy (probably around 2015 or so); and comes from his own personal collection. Comes with a custom engraved acrylic base.
