Elbaite Tourmaline
This is a lovely and rare green Connecticut tourmaline from the well known Gillette Quarry, of a quality, color, and translucency we seldom see for sale. These were legendary even when they came out. Like some of the other New England tourmaline-bearing pegmatites, ones from the this quarry are coveted by collectors. This one is two inches long and consists of four crystals in perfect parallel growth with staggered terminations. The crystals are all nicely striated, have a glassy luster and display pyramidal terminations. The piece is totally gem for its entire length and has a very rich green color and the very edges of the crystals, as well as their tips, have a yellowish tint to them. Very attractive and very uncommon to find these on the market! This is probably from 1950s-1960s finds at the Gillette Quarry. Ex. Florence Mecke collection, said to be previously from Harvard Museum. Recently in the James Zigras collection, of which we purchased a small historic Connecticut suite.
