If such a thing as mineral Type Locality Bingo existed this amazing specimen would surely have you screaming out "full house", or very nearly so. That is because it presents three of the all-time classic Leadhills minerals - Caledonite, Lanarkite and Scotlandite. What is even nicer is that all of these species have names associated with the local area, or Scotland in general: Scotlandite - the last of these three to be named, was described in 1984, and was of course named after its country of origin; Caledonite and Lanarkite, were both named and described in 1832, the first after "Caledonia" the ancient name for Scotland, and Lanarkite after the county where Susanna mine is located. At very large miniature to very small cabinet in size this is quite a substantial specimen of these rare classics. Comprising a dense (as one would expect for so many lead-bearing minerals) cream coloured compact mass of Cerussite the transition to darker cream coloured Lanarkite comes in the form of bladed crystals protruding into a cavity. The Lanarkite crystals reach up to 8 mm in length and are in places overgrown by finely crystallized 'balls' of blue-green Caledonite. The rarer species Scotlandite forms tiny colourless spiky crystals. Additionally, translucent peppermint-green stacked pseudohexagonal microcrystals are likely to be Susannite, or Leadhillite, both of which also see Leadhills as their Type Locality. A remarkably 'complete' assemblage of rarities, all in one place.
