A set of two very fine twinned glassy mostly gemmy crystals of cerussite, the largest 3.4 cm in length, set perfectly up on matrix. This is in really fine condition. The Tsumeb Mine in Namibia is one of the most famous polymetallic deposits in the world, with mining beginning in the early 20th century and continuing for many decades. The deposit is a complex pipe like body hosted in dolomitic limestone and is exceptionally rich in copper, lead, and zinc, along with a wide range of rare elements. Mining was carried out through extensive underground workings that reached great depths, and the oxidized zone of the deposit produced an extraordinary variety of secondary minerals. Among these, cerussite, a lead carbonate mineral, is especially notable for its large, transparent to translucent crystals, often displaying high luster and intricate forms. Tsumeb cerussite specimens are considered among the finest ever found and are highly valued for their size, clarity, and complex crystal habits. Twinning in minerals refers to the symmetrical intergrowth of two or more crystals of the same mineral in specific and repeated orientations. In cerussite, twinning is very common and produces a wide variety of complex and attractive crystal forms. These twins often occur as reticulated, cyclic, or star like aggregates, where multiple crystal segments are joined together in a precise geometric arrangement. The twinning is controlled by the internal crystal structure and can result in repeated patterns that give cerussite its distinctive appearance. At localities such as Tsumeb, twinned cerussite crystals can form delicate, intergrown structures that are both scientifically interesting and highly prized by collectors.
