A stunning GEM TRANSPARENT tourmaline crystal perched on contrasting quartz, this unique matrix madagascar mineral specimen simply glows from across a room! The color is amazing, a bright electric hue. The crystal is completely gemmy and measures 3.2 cm tall, 1 cm thick, and 1.5 cm wide. It has no repairs nor restoration, and was the only matrix specimen recovered in a small pocket of green tourmaline in 2007, which was later found to be (surprisingly) a green liddicoatite - a very rare calcium-rich varietal of the tourmaline group unique to the geology of Madagascar. Most liddicoatite is color zoned, and nearly all is a dark exterior which has has reds or yellow zones within (making truly gem clear liddicoatite crystals, most usually red, a premium in the mineral world). A pure green and gemmy liddicoatite is unheard of - so far as I know, unique to this pocket. I would not believe it if this was not published reputably, and by the source I trust: the story on this entire pocket and discovery was published in the Madagascar special issue of Le Regne Minerals Magazine #80, page 45 (we have a copy for the buyer). It was in the private collection of Laurent Thomas, who found it in one of the prospects he was working there; and he sold it to Paul Stahl at a later date. Paul specialized in miniatures and small cabinet pieces with aesthetics and rarity, and this was one of his very very few tourmalines....most simply not being rare and unique enough to interest him. Note that it was trimmed for improvement of balance and aesthetics, at that point. This, however, is totally unique among tourmalines.
