Quartz var. Amethyst (scepter)
A very rare matrix specimen from the famous Rhode Island amethyst location, featuring a 3 cm long, doubly-terminated crystal on contrasting matrix of milky quartz crystals. These are a Holy Grail in American mineral collecting as they came out only in a few pockets from a seaside cliff area about to collapse into the ocean in Rhode Island. This 1985-ish find was instantly one of those classics where specimens became treasured like gold among East Coast collectors, and few were seen to trickle out even at that time; and hoarded like gold. Today, they are very hard to come by and we only see them as generational collections come to market, with 1-2 in each of the collections built in that era. I have seen many miniatures, a few larger still, but this is a superb, well-balanced specimen with unusual matrix appeal and a nicely central crystal. The crystal is also of high quality, not milky as so many were. Since then, this and a few single crystals he bought at the same time have resided in the specialized educational quartz collection case of Bill Larson at his store, The Collector. Built since the late 1970s until I bought this unique and varied quartz collection in 2020, this is like a time window into quartz classics of the past.
