A perfect GEM fluorite crystal perched on matrix makes for a special miniature, in this elegant specimen from old finds circa 2008-2012, from the early days of Huanggang Mines. The major crystal is simply breathtaking in person, bright and clean and unusually pretty for the colorless style, as it shows off all faces. It is perched up on a small matrix pedestal; and measures 3.6 x 3.2 x 2.2 cm for the crystal itself. The crystal is a highly modified cuboctahedron with broad faces. This quality is 1 in 1000. We saw the whole rise and fall of Huanggang fluorites from the late 2000s through about 2015 finds, and this particular style, shape, and quality was never ever common. That impeccable quality and unusual representation of a rare crystal habit is why it was kept so long in the extensive Chinese miniatures suite of Steve Smale of Berkeley, CA (he held it for nearly 20 years, after all). The piece just glows in person with a brightness hard to describe and that does not show well in photos.
