Iron var. Taenite (meteorite)
A gorgeous, bright, 114 gram sample of the Chinga meteorite, from an old collection we purchased that had a small group of systematic meteorites within. Chinga meteorites seem to be brighter and take a higher polish than most others, and the reason is apparently (according to google) that is is a more pure form of one type of extraterrestrial iron, whereas most iron meteorites are mixtures of several forms of nickel-iron alloys found in such things: it is more taenite, than a taenite and kamacite mixture. it has no internal patterns, no Widmanstätten lines, as we might expect in other stony iron meteorites. The Chinga meteorite is a primarily iron meteorite and its total chemical composition is (per google): 82.8% iron, 16.6% nickel, and traces of cobalt and phosphorus. It was found in 1913 by gold diggers in Tuva near the Chinge River in Russia after which it is named (254 kg recovered). 114 grams.
