Iron var. Kamacite (meteorite)
Discovered in 2009 after a crater was identified on Google Earth, this NWA GEBEL meteorite is an "ungrouped" ataxite iron meteorite, meaning it doesn't fit into any existing meteorite classification group. It is thought to have fallen within the last 5000 years. This stone is mostly composed of iron and nickel, with some germanium and gallium content reported. It is known for its unique, "lizard skin"-like texture; and the sharp shapes which are resulting fragments from the impact explosion. It is reportedly, also known to be very heavy for its size (and this one is, at 747 grams, heavier than we expected when picking it up!). Apparently, they have no patterning inside and can look quite beautiful when cut and polished, but this remains a complete, intact "fragment" from the original impact, left intact and complete all around. We obtained this from an old collection we purchased that had a small group of systematic meteorites within, as examples of extraterrestrial iron. 747 grams.
