Elbaite - Tourmaline Double Terminated
Doubly-terminated pink-red Elbaite tourmalines are rare from the Coronel Murta pegmatites in Minas Gerais state, Brazil, and indeed rare from anywhere. This great 5.3 cm long crystal is essentially a 'floater', a termed used to describe when a crystal has no obvious point of attachment to host rock. It displays the richest vibrant deep raspberry-red colour for which Coronel Murta is famed and presents one flat pinacoid termination and at the other end of the prism a three-side pyramidal termination but with a small crystal of Elbaite lying partially across this end. The crystal has gemmy portions but towards the pinacoid end it shows internal misting with fine inclusions. Very minor chipping can be seen with magnification around the pinacoid termination, but overall this is a superb Coronel Murta piece.
