"Mango” Quartz

Cabiche, Quípama Municipality, Western Boyacá Province,

Boyacá Department, Colombia

16 cm tall x 14.5 cm wide

This yellow/orange tipped quartz, or “Mango” quartz, was discovered in 2017. They were known to have been found earlier close to the famous emerald mines of Colombia. The mine owners valued them very highly and would not sell them. The colorful inclusion is believed to be the mineral halloyosite.

There have been several variations discovered. This particular type the crystals are thinner, brighter, more

transparent, and more yellow than orange, as if kissed by sunlight. This radiating burst of crystals shooting from an earthen matrix sits among the finest that have been found to date.

To read about this discovery see Rocks & Minerals Magazine vol. # 94, May/June 2019.

This specimen was featured in our Illumination exhibitoin.
