Elbaite with Lepidolite
The famous Himalaya mine at Mesa Grande, San Diego County, California, USA is renowned for its pink Elbaite tourmaline crystals. This 8.8 cm tall flat-topped pinacoid terminated prism is a lovely shade, or shades of translucent pink, as it displays gentle zonation in colour. It shows an interesting slight curvature, or bending, along its length and its termination although undamaged, is recessed down one edge as the crystal formed. Its base is a fractured surface, but reveals nicely the internal colour zoning. The crystal responds very well to back lighting and is a superb size for display. A small cluster of pale lavender coloured Lepidolite crystals sit on the surface of the striated prism side of the Elbaite crystal midway up its length. A fine Himalaya mine piece.
