Amethyst geodes with orange calcite from Ametista do Sul, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, form within the basaltic flows of the Serra Geral Formation, where Cretaceous‐age gas cavities were first lined by drusy amethyst crystals ranging from pale lavender to deep purple and later saw calcium‐carbonate-rich fluids infiltrate to deposit orange calcite directly on the amethyst. These specimens—often measuring tens of centimeters across—are prized for the striking contrast between the purple amethyst interiors and the vivid orange calcite overgrowths, and some individuals even display bright fluorescence under UV light. The calcites on this specimen are exhibit an unusually vibrant shade of orange that is rarely seen in any mineral. This specimen is over 5kg.
