Himalaya Mine Tourmaline

The Himalaya Mine, located on Mesa Grande in San Diego County, California, opened around 1898 and over its lifetime produced an estimated 250 000 pounds of gem-quality tourmaline—including a record 5.5 tons in 1904—making it one of the world’s most prolific tourmaline mines. Early leases by Ed Over and Arthur Montgomery in 1935 yielded fine specimens, but it was Ralph Potter’s acquisition in the early 1950s that revitalized operations and, in 1977, Pala International’s lease drove over 9 000 feet of tunnels to mine through 1998. The mine’s pink tourmalines were highly prized by Chinese Empress Dowager Cixi in the early 1900s, and today its underground workings stretch more than five miles of steep passageways, with tailings still sought by collectors for colorful tourmaline and associated minerals. This doubly terminated crystal is in great shape, has a little lepidolite on the sides, and a small accenting doubly terminated on one end. It displays nicely in spite of one repair.
