Vanadian Dravite
A single, large thumbnail-sized, gemmy deep bottle green to vivid chromium green Dravite Tourmaline crystal measuring to 2.8 cm from the Nadonjukin area in mid-northern Tanzania. Sometimes documented as from Commander mine this material was originally described as chromium enriched, or Chrome Dravite, but the green colouration is now known to be due to a small percentage of Vanadium with a small yellowish core. Hence it is now referred to as vanadium enriched Dravite or Vanadian Dravite. All of the crystals we have seen came from one small pocket excavated during 2016. Considering most Dravite is dark brown and opaque in appearance, these crystals from Tanzania are truly exceptional. Not only are they colourful, but they have a true gem quality to them - which with backlighting is mesmerizing.
