Hydroboracite
This is an exceptional specimen of this uncommon hydrated calcium-magnesium borate from Kazakhstan, and part of the Type Locality borate deposit here. This colorful and aesthetic piece features numerous, relatively large, yellow, glistening orbs of Hydroboracite from 0.6 to 2 cm across. Individual orbs are composed of tight, radiating sprays of needles to platelets of crystals whose numerous terminations scintillate with any incident light! There must be at least three dozen spiky crystal orbs of various sizes on the piece, some more isolated than others and they all cascade nicely down the fron the piece. The brownish translucent matrix we assume to be Colemanite. This is a world class example of the species from an important historic borate locality, and was in the rare species subcollection of Hoppel (a pseudonym for a prominent midwest collector who built his collection largely in the 1980s-1990s).
