Elbaite
This pretty Elbaite miniature is from the famous Himalaya mine in San Diego County, California. Two individual gemmy pink prismatic Elbaite crystals are joined together at a shallow angle, one on top of the other. The larger lower crystal (2.9 cm long) displays colour zoning from pale raspberry pink at either end to wine coloured in the centre, whilst the upper, balanced crystal (2.5 cm long), is uniformly pink, but with a 5 mm long pale pink zone at its base. The larger and wider lower crystal has a fracture surface as its base, but it is level, allowing the whole specimen to stand upright without support. The lower crystal displays surface indentations on two sides, disrupting the usual vertical growth lines and has a couple of natural pits on its termination which is otherwise nicely crystallized with sloping faces. The indentations are not human induced damage, but imprints where other crystals had been in contact during growth. The upper crystal has noticeable chipping around its termination and a few minor rough marks on its prism sides where a micaceous mineral had grown into the surface. Overall, this miniature displays very well, with the benefit of being self-standing and with a rather fun co-joined crystal habit. Colour-wise it is a lovely shade of pale raspberry-pink, quite gemmy, and any damage does not stand out.
