Coronel Murta in Jequitinhonha Valley, Minas Gerais, Brazil is renowned for its superb raspberry red Elbaite tourmaline crystals. This 6.3 cm tall, individual, matrixless crystal is full of character, and quite different to many specimens from Coronel Murta. The crystal displays a dramatic colour shift from colourless at its base upwards into pale pink, cerise, raspberry red and then into a orange-infused red at its tip. Glassy and gemmy throughout, it is also full of internal reflections providing real character. The termination is sharp, well-defined and free from damage, but most notably not the usual Coronel Murta flat pinacoid face, rather, a lovey five-sided pyramidal termination - the traditional three, but with the development of two extra faces. These terminal faces are strikingly glassy and bright. A really beautiful Elbaite crystal of the highest quality.
