This large cabinet specimen is a really unusual combination from the Fano mine pegmatite at Cahuilla Mountain, Riverside County, California. Fano mine is best known for some of the finest crystals of Schorl found in the United States, as long, but fairly wide, well-terminated individual crystals, freestanding, or off-matrix. Some small, but well-formed Smoky Quartz crystals are also known from this pegmatite which was discovered back in 1902, but it is rare to see well-formed Schorl crystals within Quartz from Fano mine, let alone a Smoky Quartz crystal of this size and form. At 14 x 10 cm, this flattened 'tabular' Quartz crystal with multiple terminations and with a smaller short prismatic crystal shooting off from the side, is in itself an amazing specimen from this mine. However, added to this is the inclusion of several long glossy black Schorl crystals skewering through the upper part of the Quartz crystal. These Schorl crystals are much thinner than the usual off-matrix crystals seen online and make for a very distinctive piece, although several of these long crystals are not terminated. The Quartz crystal is pale smoky in colour, and in a number of places has a 'skin' or film of opaque white to grey Quartz. It is in great overall condition, with one minor chip to one of the multiple terminations along the top of the crystal. An impressive Fano mine specimen.
