Description

The Pederneira mine at S'o Jos' da Safira in Minas Gerais, Brazil, is internationally famous for its magnificent variety of Elbaite Tourmalines found in the complex pegmatite which has , and is, so meticulously worked and studied. Many of you will own or recall the wonderful Mineralogical Record special edition on the Pederneira mine (Vol. 46, No. 1) with its accompanying DVD. If you have since hankered after a nice and affordable specimen from this classic locality, then this could be the one, priced at a very reasonable $1,000. An ex-matrix specimen, two sub-parallel, leafy-lime-green Elbaite crystals diverge slightly from a common point of contact, the longer unterminated crystal measuring 5.8 cm and the shorter, steeply trigonal terminated prism, 3.2 cm long. These are surrounded by several small, yet similar, un-terminated crystals. All the Elbaites are semi-transparent with many zones and patches tending towards gemmy. A delightful example of Elbaite Tourmaline from the Pederneira mine.
