Tourmaline
The Tourmaline King mine at Pala, California, USA is one of the most famous gem pegmatite mines in California. Discovered in 1903, its history is long and fascinating, with several magnificent pockets of sizable gem pink Elbaite tourmaline crystals encountered but in the early days many of the very best crystals were sent directly to China. This superb, 5 cm long individual doubly-terminated crystal is a classic. Gemmy and translucent it displays subtle colour shades from pastel pink through white to a slightly greenish-tinted pyramidal termination. With fine striated prism faces and a lovely upper termination it really makes for a very fine Californian Elbaite crystal and with the pedigree of Tourmaline King mine behind it adds the icing to the cake.
