Tourmaline
A choice, large thumbnail of extremely deep champagne coloured tourmaline (most probably Elbaite var. Rubellite) which grades to a cap of gemmy intense crimson-pink. This off-matrix specimen is from the Malkhan Pegmatite Field, south-east of Lake Baikal, in Transbaikalia, Eastern-Siberian, Russia. This pegmatite deposit was only discovered in 1980 but has now become famous for its variously coloured tourmalines and other pegmatite minerals. In reflected light, the crystal appears a gradation of deep cherry-red to deep pink, but in transmitted light, becomes the colours described above. The flat pinacoid termination is naturally slightly frosted and displays attractive bevelled edges to some of the prism faces. A small, but visually stunning tourmaline from this remote Russian locality.
