Old wulfenites from the remote lead and silver mines in New Mexico such as this, date to the late 1890s activity here and a few instances of later collecting in the 1920s-30s. They are very, very rarely offered for sale. These wulfenites tend to occur in big jumbly plates of crystals, without as much aesthetic as historic appeal. This, however, is a dominant and strong large miniature that shows off a tight cluster of giant crystals of the color and habit that is immediately recognizable, to 3.5 cm. It is impactful, displayable, and not too big nor too small. It is aesthetic for what it is, enough to fit with other wulfenites on display, whereas most others are simply historical reference specimens in context. This is a fine piece bought in 2011 from the older collection of Harold Michel when it was dispersed by Dave Bunk (for $1250 at that time). An older label notes a previous history as well. It is fabulous for what it is!
