What a surprising combination specimen from the Franklin Mine in New Jersey, as it features a cluster of almost chocolatey brown, trapezohedral garnets is paired with a stout crystal of Hendricksite (a rare member of the Mica Group containing zinc)! One large Andradite crystal figures prominently on this piece and it measures 4.7 cm across at its widest. This well-formed Garnet along with its a few of its smaller companions display some limited translucency on the faces and edges and some of its edges show hexoctahedral modifications! This combination piece is rounded out with a relatively large and well-formed, columnar crystal of bronze-brown Hendricksite that measures 1.5 cm in length and 2 cm across. The Franklin Mine is the co-type locality for the mineral along with the Buckwheat Pit of the Franklin Mine. Ex. George Elling collection. George has one of the largest and most comprehensive Franklin mineral collections, built over 30 years and more of careful collecting and purchases such things from previous old collections. Honestly this specimen is a very good Franklin garnet, but some collectors may prefer the hendricksite portion and.... it could even be trimmed in half to have two specimens, now that we look at it.
