Hydroxylherderite (1969 Pocket) With Tourmaline
From the famous 1969 pocket of purple Hydroxylherderites (see Bancroft's famous book Gem & Crystal Treasures), we have this very choice toenail/small miniature crystal! The crystal, which is gemmy and doubly-terminated, has a light lavender color and excellent luster, characteristic of this unique find. It has an unusually fine form, and I cannot recall seeing a doubly-terminated crystal of such textbook shape.. Also, it is unusually gemmy and clean! Even more amazing, it appears to have grown on the tip of a deep green Elbaite crystal, perched in the air. The Tourmaline's termination remains, penetrating the Hydroxylherderite and creating a perch for the 'floater' herderite. This is an excellent example of the species, and quite aesthetic, from a major find.
