Description
Source special issue: self-collected-minerals, PDF page: 344. Label: Vanadinite (arsenic-rich) and calcite, 4.2 cm, from the Macy mine, Hillsboro District, Sierra County, New Mexico; collected with Jerry Simmons. My dad and I decided to collect at this mine for the first time on a spur of the moment decision. It turned out to be the right choice as, after a few hours of digging, I broke into a fist sized pocket that contained this prize. After showing this specimen to other experienced NM field collectors, the conclusion was reached that this was the best “endlichite” ever seen from the mine. Talk about hitting it big right off the bat! I often show this specimen to collectors for species identification and only a handful that are already familiar with the locality have guessed correctly. How many people have seen gemmy yellow vanadinite before? Philip Simmons collection; Jeff Scovil photo.
