From the very early 1990s, this find, in my opinion, represented the finest blue fluorite produced by the mining district. This one is gemmy was super color and accented nicely with crystals of calcite. In excellent condition.
The Ozark Mahoning No. 1 Mine, located in Hardin County, Illinois, was an important operation within the Illinois Kentucky Fluorspar District, a region historically known for its production of fluorite and associated minerals. Developed in the mid 20th century, the mine was operated by Ozark Mahoning Company and focused on underground extraction of fluorite from vein deposits cutting through limestone host rock. The mine became well known for producing high quality fluorite, often in cubic crystals with colors ranging from purple to blue to yellow, as well as associated minerals such as calcite, galena, and sphalerite. Modern mining methods and processing techniques were used to meet industrial demand for fluorite, particularly in the steel and chemical industries. Operations eventually declined as market conditions changed, and the mine closed in the late 20th century, but it remains a notable locality for both its industrial significance and its mineral specimens.
