I buy every fine example of this old USA material that I can, for the beautiful result of a rare replacement of large azurite crystals by copper. For whatever reason, copper after azurite (or malachite) seemingly almost never happens in nature. This is the world's best location - perhaps only - for large copper rosettes with such a geometry, and where this unusual event somehow unfolded in deep geological time. The result is a beautiful sculptural cluster of sharp copper crystals, having faithfully taken the shape of the earlier azurite rose. Many of these fine pseudos were collected by George English and A.E. Foote in the 1890's and were sold to Eastern collectors and also to European collectors (we have seen labels in the British Museum back to the early 1900s). Apparently, some of these were found through the 1960s; although the sharpest and largest were found closer to the early 1900s. This particular specimen is the best, largest, sharpest example we have ever had in dealing since the 1980s. We first obtained it in 1999-2000 from the sale of the Gerald Herfurth (1930-1998) collection. He was an amazing collector who specialized in USA and worldwide rare finds. This is a classic New Mexico and USA locality, but usually we only see reference samples, whereas this is a world class pseudomorph specimen of display quality. The blades of copper are amazingly sharp on this fine, historic specimen.
