David Freeland Minerals
For nearly five decades, David R. Freeland Jr. has pursued the worlds rarest expressions of the mineral kingdom, assembling a private collection that reflects a lifetime of discernment, travel, and devotion to earth's artistry.
David's eye for stone was forged early. Growing up amid the rich cultural heritage of the Southwest, the son of a father who traded with Native American craftsmen, he learned to recognize quality and character in a specimen long before most collectors ever hold one. That instinct would guide a lifetime of acquisition.
Over more than 48 years, his travels in search of the finest gem-quality material became journeys of discovery. Mines, dealers, estates, and field localities around the world each yielded their treasures, and David developed a connoisseur's sense for the pieces worth keeping: those rare in form, exceptional in color, and impeccable in provenance.
His parallel mastery as a lapidary deepened his collecting. Decades spent cutting and inlaying the world's finest opal, tanzanite, sapphire, tourmaline, and ruby taught him to read the internal architecture of a stone, and to know when a specimen's natural structure was too extraordinary to ever be cut. Those pieces he set aside, preserved in their raw state, to become the heart of this collection. He draws much of his inspiration from nature and remains committed to supporting ecological projects.
