The best of the best of Georgia amethysts are up there in competition with the best amethysts from anywhere else....they have a shocking color and quality. But, the best of the best of those few, are definitely those that are perched on white quartz matrix for the shocking contrast. And these, other than a few stray specimens from small pockets in modern times, almost all came out prior to 2005. This piece was personally collected by well-known field collector, dealer, and American Mineral Heritage Award winner Ken Roberts, back in the early 2000s with mine owner Rodney Moore. Ken kept it in his collection through various culls and sales of everything until only his personally collected display material was left to sell in his 80's; and finally let this go. The specimen is pristine, complete all around, with no repairs. His collection was only specimens of such beauty and quality - as as his dealer stock, from the 70s-90s. It has no damage, but had a very strange crystal ingrowth or contact on one small 4-5 mm portion of one top tip that looked like damage even though it was not damage. It was some ingrown hopper-like crystal growth or contact, which we restored to a smooth tip with a tiny application of permanent restoration epoxy simply to improve that visual discontinuity. This is a cabinet specimen of the rarest of the rare, purple on white amethyst of the ultimate contrast, from the most important USA locality for amethyst (and one of the top five in the world, I'd argue). It has excellent provenance and came from the best era of production of this mine. The mine still operates, but pieces like this are admittedly not coming out and, based on several decades of following the progress here, not likely to.
