Pink Fluorite with Calcite, Clinochlore and Prehnite
This unusual pink fluorite specimen is not from the Swiss Alps or China, but is a much more rare unique find from Brazil! It also has an uncommon group of associated minerals that include calcite, clinochlore and prehnite! There are four intergrown, pink, octahedral fluorites that are translucent to transparent at the top of the piece that are in stark contrast to the white calcite that dominates the piece. The fluorites are from 2 to 3.1 cm in size and three of them are tightly intertwined and in parallel growth with the fourth, adjacent crystal more isolated. The color is a lovely medium pink; and the intergrown crystals are more transparent from the back compared to the front. The more isolated fluorite is definitely the more gemmy. One larger, 1.4 cm, translucent white hexagonal, barrel-shaped calcite crystal sits adjacent to the fluorites, and there are numerous, granular calcites admixed in the matrix of the piece on the back of the piece (along with some prehnite). There are abundant, 2 mm, scintillating, colorless to white prehnite crystals that cover the lower half of the piece in front and provide great color and textural contrast to the pink fluorite. The back of the piece is also host to over a dozen, scattered, silvery green, platy clinochlore crystals as if needed for added interest. An attractive and interesting Brazilian combination specimen that is completely unique in our experience. We obtained this in the purchase of the collection of the legendary Alvaro Lucio, a dealer and collector for over 80 of his years. He in turn obtained it from Luis Menezes, the other legendary Brazilian dealer/collector of the time. Both were legends among the collecting and dealer communities in Brazil, for most of the late 1900s and early 2000s. The fact that this was in both collections is, to me, very sentimental and also validating.
