Fluorite (etched corner)
This is an extraordinary "Carthage Corner" etched fluorite from famed the Elmwood Mine in Tennessee. These are always so sculptural with their point of three intersecting cube faces at the top and perched upon an etched pedestal of fluorite. This one has a trio of glassy cube faces sitting atop a thick stalk of the etched fluorite (we now know that these corners were formed from dissolution effects on a large cube and that this was formerly a point emanating from the center of the cube, making the "top" as we see it now, a corner of and from the original cube). The top of the "corner" is a vibrant and rich, mostly transparent grape-purple with very lustrous faces with the pedestal of the piece a transparent, lighter shade of purple which is rare for these as they are often colorless, or nearly so. The "corner" portion also displays lovely zoning within 5 mm of the edge manifested as alternating dark and medium purple layers. This is excellent quality for the material and well preserved. There are also miniscule dots of hydrocarbons that can be seen within the pedestal (which show also under UV light), not so much in the corner itself. A superb example in the size range and a classic of Elmwood material from the 1990s heyday here.
