NATIVE COPPER in CALCITE
Glossy colourless Calcite crystals, often scalenohedral in form, with bright orange-pink metallic inclusions of Native Copper are one of the most sought after mineral finds from the famous copper mines of Michigan. This is because of their rarity, but also due to their beauty and fascinating geological process of formation. This is an admittedly smaller example, but despite the Calcite crystals reaching only 3 to 4 mm in length, they are really bright and gemmy and the Native Copper inclusions really shine bright. Under magnification it is simply marvellous and is a great starter specimen of this classic for those who can't stretch to the prices of larger, display specimens of Native Copper included Calcite. It is from the Ahmeek mine at Allouez Township, Keweenaw County which is a less well-known mine, but nevertheless a quite long-lived operation, finally closing in 1966. Ex David Hardman Collection, no. 3306.
