Sperrylite is, by far, the best crystallized representation of platinum in a mineral species. And, the best came from Russia, generally in the 1990s and early 2000s. This iconic piece in the Schauss collection is no exception. A sharp sperrylite crystal showing incredible luster, great form, and possibly a sharp twinning in the middle (although some debate whether this is a real twin or just simply looks like a twin). The large pseudo-cubic crystal is to 1.3 cm on edge, quite significant. This is from the famous 1990s production and release at the Tucson show. Photography for some reason accentuates small cracks on the surface of most sperrylite crystals, which is typical as they get to 1 cm in size and better. Larger crystals are too cracked to be generally as beautiful as those in the 1-1.2 cm size range, so this would be considered large for the quality. Hence, the video better conveys the combination of luster and sharpness, along with the metallic color, that make these crystals so beautiful. An important thumbnail example of a very rare and important species. Exhibited: One of the 35 displayed specimens that won the 2010 Paul Desautels Trophy for Best Mineral Case in Competition at the Tucson Gem & Mineral Show.
